Spillers Horse Feeds

Non-Heating Feeds

Some horses and ponies can become over excitable and unpredictable when fed feeds containing a high level of cereals. Cereals contain starch which is digested relatively quickly by the horse producing what is known as “quick release energy”. It is this type of energy than can cause some horses or ponies to become fizzy.

We stock:

Horse and Pony Cubes - the original and the best non-heating* cube, low in cereal starch.   Like Cool Mix™, they are ideal for horses and ponies with low to medium energy requirements.  The formulation now benefits from the addition of magnesium, known for its calming properties.  Also contains an excellent vitamin and mineral formulation support package for long-term well-being. *A non-heating feed is one that is less likely to produce excitable behaviour in some horses and ponies when fed at the recommended rate (20kg)

Cool Mix™ - ideal for horses and ponies with low energy requirements. The formulation now benefits from the addition of magnesium, known for its calming properties.  Controlled levels of cereal starch and added soya oil to help keep your horse in excellent condition.  Contains NovaMin-S®, a unique formulation of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants for health you can see  (20kg)

High Fibre Cubes - low starch, high fibre formulation makes High Fibre Cubes ideal for good doers, native ponies and box resting horses.  SPILLERS® High Fibre Cubes are non-heating*, making them ideal for excitable horses and ponies in light work.  High Fibre Cubes feature the unique Bio-active System™; a blend of natural fibre sources that help support gut health and digestion.  Ideal for veterans with poor teeth as High Fibre Cubes can be soaked with warm water for 30 mins to form a mash.  *A non-heating feed is one that is less likely to produce excitable behaviour in some horses and ponies when fed at the recommended rate (20kg)

Feeds for those prone to Laminitis

Inappropriate nutrition can cause laminitis.  An excess of starch in cereals is one risk. Rich pasture presents another; too much grass can result in high intake of sugars and fructans which are sources of highly fermentable carbohydrate. Reducing the risk of nutritionally induced laminitis is a matter of management: restricting grass intake (particularly during the spring and autumn) and avoiding high starch compound feeds.

Research into laminitis recommends high fibre diets with low levels of starch, sugar and fructans, and a broad spectrum of vitamins and minerals.  High Fibre Cubes and Happy Hoof® contain essential vitamins and minerals with high fibre, low starch and low sugars. Both feeds are approved by The Laminitis Trust.

We stock:

Happy Hoof® - a unique, low calorie fibre blend for horses and ponies prone to laminitis. Happy Hoof is the first complete chopped fibre feed approved by The Laminitis Trust.  A unique blend of oat straw, alfalfa, grass, mint, garlic and soya oil with added vitamins and minerals.  Extends eating time due to its short chopped form Happy Hoof® can be used as a complete feed or a replacement for compound feed (20kg)

High Fibre Cubes – for more info see Non-Heating Feeds.

Conditioning

Spillers® Conditioning Feeds improve condition in as little as two weeks without excitability.

We stock:

Conditioning Cubes - high oil and controlled starch levels help to achieve the desired condition without fizz.  Good quality protein from soya to support muscle tone and topline.  Contain soya oil for non-heating* calories and excellent coat condition.  A full complement of vitamins and minerals to support long term well-being.  Both feeds are suitable for horses competing under FEI or Jockey Club rules.  *A non-heating feed is one that is less likely to produce excitable behaviour in some horses and ponies when fed at the recommended rate (20kg)

Fibres

Horses are natural fibre digesters. Over 2/3 of the equine digestive capacity is principally devoted to the digestion and absorption of nutrients from fibre, compared to just 20% for processing protein, starch and oil.

We stock:

Competition

Just as in human athletes, performance in horses is influenced by many factors. However, no athlete can ignore the role of nutrition in providing the fuel for that performance. Providing the competition horse with the correct amount and type of energy can mean the difference between success and failure. The Response® competition range offers four competition feeds enabling you to choose an optimum supply of energy to suit your horse’s requirements.

We stock:

Competition Mix - the perfect choice for all disciplines of competitive riding from Pony Club mounted games through to Eventing or hunting. With a balanced supply of both slow release and instant energy alongside an enhanced level of nutrition including B vitamins to support optimum energy release and vitamin C to support respiratory health, Competition Mix meets all the specialist needs of the competing horse (20kg)

Instant Energy Feed - higher in cooked cereals but still contain a good proportion of high digestible fibre compared to most other traditional competition feeds.  The energy sources within these feeds support muscle and digestive system health.  The Response® mix is perfectly balanced - has levels of high quality protein and similar levels of energy perfectly suited to the demands placed on a competition horse and contains the same high specification micronutrient pack including chelated minerals and antioxidant vitamins to support athletic performance (20kg)

Slow Release Energy Feed - higher in high digestible fibre and oil.  The energy sources within these feeds support muscle and digestive system health.  Response® Slow Release Energy Mix and Cubes are almost identical in their formulation, but we recognise some horses and ponies have a preference for either cubes or mix so we have made both forms available. The Response® mix is perfectly balanced - has levels of high quality protein and similar levels of energy perfectly suited to the demands placed on a competition horse and contains the same high specification micronutrient pack including chelated minerals and antioxidant vitamins to support athletic performance (20kg)

Racing

The Racing Feed range has been formulated using the very best in multi-layered nutritional support with one clear aim in mind, to help you to train more winners.  SPILLERS® have over 40 years of experience in racehorse feed manufacture and, as industry leaders, we work closely with organisations such as the  British Horseracing Authority on key issues such as naturally occurring prohibited substances in feeds.

We stock:

Lay Off Cubes – as a healthy respiratory system is vital for any racehorse, SPILLERS® HDF® Lay Off Feeds contain respiratory support nutrients, proven in published research to help support the horse’s own lung defences.  High levels of antioxidants in feed are of particular importance to racehorses as high levels of training increases the risk of muscle damage and infections. HDF® Lay Off Feeds are therefore high in Vitamin E. When feeding HDF® Lay Off Feeds, no further Vitamin E supplementation will be required  when fed at the recommended rate .  Contain high specification, fully balanced formulas to support recovery in box resting horses.  With live yeast to support gut health, particularly during changes in the diet (25kg)

Racehorse Cubes - as a healthy respiratory system is vital for any racehorse, Racehorse Cubes contain respiratory support nutrients, proven in published research to help support the horse’s own lung defences.  High levels of antioxidants in feed are of particular importance to racehorses as high levels of training increases the risk of muscle damage and infections.  Racehorse Cubes are therefore high in Vitamin E. When feeding Racehorse Cubes, no further Vitamin E supplementation will be required  when fed at the recommended rate.  B Vitamins are well known to support appetite, particularly important for horses in intensive training. Research has shown Vitamin B production by racehorses may be reduced so Racehorse Cubes contain a full complement of B Vitamins (including B1, B12 and folic acid) (25kg)

Stud

Rearing youngstock successfully is a demonstration of good stockmanship. Whether you are in the breeding business or breeding from a favourite mare, you have to wait months and even years from conception to when your mare’s progeny start realising their true potential.

Benefits of all SPILLERS® Stud feeds:

  • Added immune support - Vitamin C and ingredients rich in glutamine are added to support the immune system particularly at times of stress. Stress is significantly increased during weaning which can affect the immune system of the young foal. Vitamin C has been shown to support the immune system and therefore may be beneficial at this time.

  • All feeds contain high levels of Vitamin E which is proven to support the transfer of passive immunity via the mare’s colostrum to the foal. This will help ensure the best possible start by supporting young foals in their early weeks of life.  Formulated to support digestive health with live yeast and ingredients to encourage butyrate production which is important in the development and health of the digestive tract.  Optimal levels of lysine, methionine and threonine for exceptional muscle and topline development. Research has shown that it is protein quality that is important in driving optimum growth with lysine and threonine identified as being the most important amino acids.

  • High levels of folic acid to support increased requirements during pregnancy, lactation and growth.  A high specification of vitamins and minerals including chelated trace elements are incorporated to support overall well being and fertility.
