Helping your cows to convert feed into milk efficiently - Actisaf Yeast
At turnout, early lactation cows experience huge negative energy supply and poor dry matter intakes (DMI), leading to a risk of increased energy related metabolic disorders. A popular approach is to use feed additives that increase digestibility and feed efficiency of the diet fed. Demand for yeast products from Mole Valley Farmers has increased dramatically over the last 12 months within our mineral supplement portfolio to dairy and beef producers.
Live Yeast v Dead Yeast
The “activity” level of coliform forming units (cfus) in live yeast supplements vary widely across a huge range – some good, some not so good, some poor! These are always reported as cfu/g on the declaration label. Whereas live yeasts come with a guaranteed cfu level of activity, dead yeasts have no cfu activity at all. Live yeast cultures scavenge oxygen in the rumen, creating anaerobic conditions for beneficial bacteria to perform, increasing DMI (source Dan et al 2000).
An example of a live yeast is Actisaf.
This helps to lift milk yield, improve daily liveweight gains in beef systems and enhance rumen function. It has become increasing common for progressive farmers of Mole Valley Farmers to use Actisaf yeast (formerly Biosaf). Actisaf has been shown to be the most consistently effective live yeast on UK farms and now leads the UK market against all other yeast products. If you are looking to improve feed efficiency and performance, why not ask about our Actisaf Yeast Farm Pack? Alternatively, we can add Actisaf to your existing mineral supplement cost effectively.
Spring Grass
Rapid fermentation of spring grass potentially depresses the rumen pH. Feeding a live yeast has been shown to increase rumen pH (Mwenya et al 2004). High sugar and crude protein content of lush grass will also challenge rumen pH, lowering butterfats.
Independent research work on live yeast cultures has shown that quite often the optimum pH in the rumen is compromised in early/mid lactation when fast fermenting forages (grass) and other raw materials such as molasses and ground cereals are fed to promote milk production. Actisaf helps to stabilize lower rumen pH levels.
Magnitude of Response
Where poor rumen function is a challenge, milk yield responses of up to 2 litres/cow have been reported.
Signs of Poor Rumen Function
- Poor Peak Milk Yields & Solids
- Disappointing Dry Matter Intakes (DMI)
- SARA (Sub Acute Rumen Acidosis)
- Scouring & Cud Balls
- Lameness
The Proof is in the Pudding!
Actisaf has been approved by the EU for use in the following species of livestock. In order to gain registration and approval, the specific yeast strain must show a consistent benefit to performance. Many live yeast cultures have failed to demonstrate this and hence have not gained the required registration for dairy, beef, sheep and goats.
Our Price Promise To You
