Chicory Leys

Puna ll is a New Zealand bred broad-leaved perennial forage herb of high nutritional quality, producing high yields, from spring to late autumn. It has a large tap root giving excellent draught tollerance and can be sown into grass clover mixtures or on its own with clover. The high mineral content appears to have some anthelmintic benefits for grazing animals.

Sowing

Spring sowings are recommended, although early autumn sowing is possible providing it has established before winter dormancy. Suggested sowing rates would be for grasses and clovers 0.25 - 0.5 kgs per acre, or a pure Puna ll plus clover stand at 5.5 kgs per acre.

Puna ll has a very small, light seed and therefore should not be sown deeper than 10mm. Seed may be drilled or broadcast and has been successfully direct drilled under favourable conditions; slug bait should be used to enhance establishment. Chicory prefers well drained soils and moderate to high soil fertility. The crop requires similar N, P and K levels as grass at establishment stage. Allowing Puna ll to flower once in late autmun can enhance persistency through build up of root reserves. In New Zealand, Puna ll has been shown to persist from 2 - 4 years, depending on management, soil type and climate.

Grazing Management

Graze the crop rotationally in the sowing and keep on top of the crop to prevent flowering. Hard grazing, particularly after flowering or damage to the crown in wet conditions will effect production and persistance. Early studies of lamb growth rates on pure stands of Puna ll plus clover have shown between 300 - 400g daily live weight gain.
