Government Response to Tackling Global Warming and a Pending Energy Crisis
Taxation
A Carbon Tax will encourage individuals and businesses to change their energy consumption habits. We are already seeing this in many areas of industry, for example – motor industry driving for lower C02 emissions, oil companies targeted to generate more bio fuel, industry taxed heavily for waste packaging management, farmers targeted through NVZ’s – to name only a few.
- We have seen nuclear power station upgrades fast tracked through Government in order to ensure we replace our outdated nuclear generation capability.
- A Government commitment to renewable energy production has set a target of 15% of energy generated within the UK to come from renewable sources by the year 2020, with an aim for 30% of electricity to be produced this way.
Renewable Energy Solutions
Renewable energy technology is still developing. However, the rural population is well placed to capitalise on free energy sources through harvesting energy:
- Harvesting energy from the sun through photovoltaic solutions
- Harvesting wind energy through wind turbine solutions
- Harvesting energy from waste through anaerobic digestion
- Harvesting energy from water through hydro power solutions
Although many of these solutions have been around for some years, the Government have recognised that, in order to encourage industry to adapt and develop these technologies further, they need to be financially viable, and there needs to be a big incentive for those who invest in renewable energy solutions.
