Ground Rock Salt

Save waste – save money on maize silage

Research in France has shown that the application of salt to the top and shoulders of maize clamps dramatically reduces the population of spoilage organisms, and so minimises the amount of surface waste.

Simply spread the ground rock salt on to the surface of the finished clamp and then roll in before the clamp is fully sheeted.

How much do you need?

Clamp area (m2) x 4 – covers top and shoulders (approximately).

(Width of clamp x length of clamp x 4) = amount of salt needed in kgs, divide by 25 for the number of bags required.

Eliminates top spoilage when applied at 3kg/m2
Minimises shoulder waste when applied at 6kg/m2

The benefits of high quality maize silage

  • A very high energy, high starch feed
  • Boosts livestock performance when fed on a balanced diet
  • Capable of being fed at high inclusion rates to ruminants to substitute bought-in feeds

Ensilage tips

  • Clamps should be firmly constructed, as for grass silage, ideally with a concrete base and solid wall to enable efficient side and corner consolidation.
  • Roll clamp well with the addition of each trailer load to prevent air pockets, particularly important with maize over 35% dry matter.
  • Spread salt on final layer
  • Seal clamp as quickly as possible and weight the clamp sheet, or use NoTyreTex pit cover.
