Intensive Beef Production
The intensive bull beef system is well documented and provides a quick and efficient route to the abattoir.
Bull beef is probably the classic example of the intensively fed beef animal, where it is fed a high concentrate diet with straw to maintain rumen function. Bulls will commonly grow at 1.4kg/day and will be sent to slaughter at or before the age of 14 months. They will have consumed approximately 2.2 tonnes of feed and will weigh around 280kg dead weight. Exact figures will depend on breed. Calculating figures can be difficult, as most farmers will be utilising their own cereals and slaughter values vary from abattoir to abattoir.
The essential requirement for a bull beef system is that the housing and handling system must be strong enough to withstand the robust temperament of adolescent bulls.
