Intensive Early Lamb Production – Management Guidelines Checklist

Bookmark and Share

1. In order to maximise the potential of the traditional early ‘Easter’ lamb market, attention to detail is critical in identifying optimum marketing dates and planning feed regimes for ewes.

2. Review the nutrition of the ewe before and after lambing.

3. Colostrum is the key to reducing losses from hypothermia and disease.

4. Feed specialist lamb feed

a) Introduce Mole Valley Farmers Multi Lamb Pellets in small amounts from week one.
b) Keep feed fresh.
c) After three weeks, reduce the ewe feed.
d) Feed Multi Lamb ad lib to slaughter in specialist feeders.  Multi Lamb Pellets contain appropriate levels of digestible fibre and live yeast (Actisaf) to ensure good rumen function and help prevent acidosis.

5. Ensure sufficient trough space for all lambs to eat at the same time.

6. Ensure a good supply of clean drinking water.

7. Wean lambs at approx. 6 weeks of age at a target liveweight of approx. 18kg. The intake of Multi Lamb Pellets must be at least 250g per head per day.

8. Ensure long fibre is available at all times.

9. Monitor performance.

10. Avoid potential health problems such as pneumonia, coccidiosis, urinary calculi, bloat and acidosis.

11. Record enterprise costings.
