MOLE-Dominator

The fastest acting additive for grass silage

MOLE-Dominator delivers the highest number of lactobacillus plantarum per gram of grass to minimise protein breakdown in the clamp and maintain maximum nutrients for animal production.  This gives better clamp stability and less dry matter loss

The benefits of using MOLE-Dominator

  • 1.3 litres per cow per day extra milk over 200 day lactation above untreated silage

  • Dominates the fermentation within 24 hours to out compete spoilage organisms found on wilted grass

Returns

  • 260 litres extra milk yield over untreated silage over a 200 day lactation
  • 5:1 return on the cost of MOLE-Dominator
  • Preserves more nutrients

  • Improves dry matter intakes

  • Dominator reduces the pH faster than other products

  • 2 million lactobacillus plantarum/gram of forage

  • Contains a primer package to kick start the fermentation process

  • Instant, ready to use

MVF’s unique silage additive offers over 5:1 investment return: R&D findings

Dairy producers will be able to make higher quality forage and subsequently improve milk yields by up to 4.4% by applying a carefully chosen additive to their grass silage this coming season, according to findings from a trial originally carried out at Wye College. This yield improvement works out at a 5:1 return on the additive cost.

In a trial, two grass silages were taken from a third year grass ley – a mix of tetraploid and diploid ryegrasses, plus clover. After cutting on 11 May and picking up two days later with a self propelled precision chop forage harvester, half the forage was treated with Lactobacillus plantarum additive at a rate of two litres/tonne. The remainder acted as a control. The silages were clamped outdoors and fed to the herd on an ad lib basis when housed. The cows were also fed supplementary concentrates. The two silage analyses showed little difference, apart from the treated which had a higher ME of 11.0 MJ/kg, compared with 10.7MJ/kg for the untreated.

While intakes of both silages were relatively high at an average 16.25kg DM/day, there was no significant difference in intake between the treated and untreated. However, the cows fed the treated silage yielded an average 1.3litres/day more than the other group, while their combined milk fat and protein yield was 5% higher. See table 1.

Furthermore, the cows fed the treated silage stayed in better condition. “The improved yield performance from cows fed the treated silage reflects not only the silage’s higher ME, but also a better utilisation of the digestible nutrients”, explains Volac International’s Technical Manager Philip Jones. While feed and fertiliser costs continue to pose challenges, it may be tempting to cut corners and make compromises this silage making season; however, it’s a decision that could cost dearly when it comes to investing in a silage additive.

MOLE-Dominator, manufactured by Volac, delivers 2 million Lactobacillus plantarum bacteria per gram of forage treated – the most concentrated product on the market. Applying this silage additive, proven to supply sufficient bacteria, can bring a return of 5:1 on milk yield alone, a figure which will contribute to offsetting high input costs. Improvements in silage digestibility are equally important when seeking to optimise the performance of other livestock and enabling a reduction in the amount of supplementary concentrates required.
