Pointers for Successful Grass Silage

  • Correct timing and amount of fertiliser to encourage yields without reducing sugars

  • Avoid late applications of fertiliser, apply nitrogen at least eight weeks before mowing

  • Do not apply slurry within ten weeks of mowing

  • When re-seeding, select a Mole Valley Premier Ley designed for silage making which meets your harvest date, yield, quality, soil type and climate

  • Avoid contamination with soil when raking or tedding

  • Rapid wilt to reduce effluent and concentrate sugars

  • Fill the clamp rapidly and evenly and compact and sheet well

  • Weigh down well to avoid surface waste
