Clovers, Ryegrasses and Renovation Mixtures
White Clover
White clovers are used in most long-term grazing leys at between 0.75 to 1.0 kg/acre inclusion rate. For overseeding 1.0kg/acre is recommended to boost nutrient value of the sward and fix Nitrogen. Up to 100 units/acre of Nitrogen are fixed by a sward with 20 to 30% clover composition.
Varieties are categorised by leaf size. Small leaf varieties are most persistent under tight sheep grazing, whilst large leaf varieties are most persistent under cattle grazing or silage management.
-
To increase the palatability of the sward and consequently animal performance.
-
To fix Nitrogen.
-
To supply additional protein and minerals to the animal.
-
To give extra production during dry spells.
-
To maintain the quality of the sward.
-
Blends combine complementary characteristics and offer greater stability of yield than single varieties within the mixture.

Red Clover
A much larger plant than white clover, used in short and medium term leys and fertility building swards.
There is renewed interest in the species as a source of home produced protein and free fixing of Nitrogen.
-
High protein level throughout the growing season.
-
Very high yields for 2-3 years.
-
Improves soil structure and fertility.
-
Large root system makes it drought resistant.
Warning: It can effect fertility of ewes due to oestregen production if grazed 6 weeks prior to tupping.

Italian Ryegrass Blend
A highly productive, rapidly establishing sward, which is versatile enough to be grazed, cut or catch cropped over the short term. With fast establishment and rapid production, it can achieve up to four silage cuts with over-winter grazing, or be used as a catch crop sown after maize. Renovation Mixes
Old pasture and leys that have become thin in the bottom can be rejuvenated by either broadcasting seed onto them or by slot seeding. Ideal ground conditions are important; use a chain harrow with reasonable spikes to get a tilth, broadcast the seed and then either roll or turn out stock to tread in.
Do not apply any Nitrogen until the new grasses are well established.
-
Clover seed can be added to either of these mixtures if required at 1 kg per pack and taking out 1kg of grass seed.
