The Team

Straight feeds teamThe Straights team at Lifton Mill consists of:

David Vinall - Straights and Blends Business Manager
Merie Dart, Elaine Lovett and Judith Clifford - Blends & Straights Traders
Karen Soul - Straights Trader
Alex Tapp - Blends Product Manager
Sharon Ellis, Anne Pearse, Kerry Lyons and Alison Bartlett - Customer Service and Administration

Our Straights Trading Operation is based at our Lifton Feed Mill site. We have six traders and a dedicated customer service and administration team selling in excess of 150,000 tonnes of straight feeds per annum.  Combined with the feed we produce at our six production plants we sell well in excess of 500,000 tonnes of feed each year. This gives us a very good level of buying power when we are negotiating with importers and suppliers which in turn helps us to be very competitive on pricing.  We have a fleet of 33 of our own lorries delivering animal feeds onto farm both for our own company and third parties. In addition we use several approved outside haulers. The size and quality of this fleet enables us to give an excellent level of service on Straights deliveries.

We aim to give a first class service in all areas of Straights Trading:

  • market information

  • buying advice

  • product availability

  • deliveries, administration and product quality with fully traceability

In addition to the office based team, we have over 50 on farm and in store feed sales specialists, who can give advice on providing feed and feed systems to milk, beef and lamb producers. We also e-mail out our Straights Newsletter which keeps you informed of prices and price trends as well as product availability and buying opportunities. If you would like to receive a copy by email, please let us know at altfeeds@molevalleyfarmers.com

The Product Range

Mole Valley Farmers supply a wide range of high quality straight feed materials from approved suppliers, out of approved stores and ports, all to a specific quality specification. The main feed materials are outlined in more detail below:

Traditional Straights

Straight feedsHipro Soya - Protein 49%, Oil 2.6%, ME 13.9MJ/kg DM. Product also available as non GM material.

Soya Pellets (Argentinean) - Protein 43%, Oil 2.5%, ME 13.8MJ/kg DM.

Soya Pellets (Brazilian) - Protein 47%, Oil 2.5%, ME 13.9MJ/kg DM.

The above are the three main soya products available as a straight feed on the market. They are by-products from human food oil extraction processes and are used as a concentrated vegetable protein source in livestock diets.

Rapemeal - Protein 35%, Oil 4.5%, ME 12MJ/kg DM. This is a by-product from human food oil extraction processes. It is a dark meal and has a high level of effective rumen degradable protein.

Soya Hulls - Protein 11%, Oil 2%, NDF 52%, ME 11.8MJ/kg DM. This material is produced from the outer case of the soya bean. It is available in a pellet and meal form and is an excellent source of digestible fibre.

Citrus Pulp - Protein 6%, Oil 2%, NDF 23%, ME 12.2MJ/kg DM. Citrus pulp is a by-product from the crushing of citrus fruits for the production of fruit juice. It is a good source of energy and is very high in sugar.

Palm Kernel Exp. - Protein 16%, Oil 9%, NDF 64%, ME 12.5MJ/kg DM. Palm kernel has a good level of energy and protein. The oil and digestible fibre content are high. It is used widely to help increase butterfat content.

Home Produced Molassed Sugar Beet  - Protein 10%, Oil 1%, NDF 28%, ME 12.6MJ/kg DM. Trident Feeds (British Sugar) are the sole producers of UK sugar beet. They produce a range of products from pellets to shreds in bulk and bags. It is a by-product from the production of sugar. It is a high energy feed with a good level of digestible fibre.

Unmolassed Imported Sugar Beet
- This product is imported by a number of different shippers as well as Trident. Note it has lower sugar content than the Trident material. It comes in a range of pellet sizes from 6mm to 11mm.

Milurex B/E - Protein 20%, Oil 5%, NDF 22%, ME 13MJ/kg DM.  This is a dried mixture of wheatfeed and the liquid co-product, stillage, from bio-ethanol production in Alsace, France.  Stillage is rich in yeast fragments and yeast protein providing added nutritional value.

ImportationMaize Gluten Imported - Protein 20%, Oil 3.6%, NDF 32%, ME 12.7MJ/kg DM. This is a by-product from maize processing to produce starch and sugar syrups. It is a balanced source of protein and energy with a good starch level. It comes in a mixed form of meal and pellets

Screened Maize Gluten Imported - As above except that the meal is screened off to leave just the pellets. However, availability is often a problem.

Maize Distillers Imported - Protein 26%, Oil 10%, NDF 34%, ME 13.6MJ/kg DM. This is a by-product from the distilling industry producing spirits and bio-fuels. The product is in meal form and is a good source of energy and protein. It also contains high copper levels so it is not suitable for feeding to sheep.

Barley Distillers Imported - Protein 24%, Oil 7.5%, ME 11.8MJ/kg DM. This product is in pellet form.

Wheat Distillers Imported - Protein 30%, Oil 6%, ME 13.6MJ/kg DM.

Home Produced Distillers - Maize, barley and wheat distillers is available from UK production. However, at present it is all produced in Scotland and there is a large haulage cost for deliveries into the South.

Sunflower Pellets - Protein 32%, Oil 2%, NDF 36%, ME 10MJ/kg DM. This is a by-product from the oil extraction process. It is available in pellet form. It has a good level of effective rumen degradable protein, but is relatively low in energy.

Wheatfeed - Protein 15%, Oil 4%, NDF 32%, ME 11.7MJ/kg DM. This is a by-product from flour milling. It is available in a meal and pellet form and is a balanced source of energy and protein. It is also high in starch.

Molasses - A wide range of molasses in bulk or mini bulk are available, including cane molasses and a comprehensive range of blends with varying levels of protein, sugar and dry matter. Bulk tank purchasing scheme options form part of the package.

Note: The above analyses are guideline figures expressed on an as fed basis, except dry matter and metabolisable energy.

Moist Feeds

Mole Valley Farmers have developed a unique range of moist blends with varying levels of dry matter and protein.

Brewers’ Grains - Protein 24%, Oil 6%, NDF 62%, ME 11.7MJ/kg DM. This is a by-product from the production of beer. It is a moist feed with a dry matter of about 24%. It is a good source of protein, energy, and digestible fibre.

Wessex Gold straight feedWessex Gold - Wessex Gold is a combination of Trafford Gold, brewers’ grains, processed bread and sugar beet pulp. It is formulated to a precise nutritional specification. The formulation may vary depending on the availability of certain ingredients.  The analysis is as follows: Dry Matter 42.5%, ME 13.5MJ/kg DM, crude protein 18.5%, starch 21%, NDF 35%.

Trafford Gold - Protein 21%, Oil 7.5%, NDF 35%, ME 13.4MJ/kg DM.  Trafford Gold comes from a single source - Cargill plc. processing facility in Manchester.  It is produced as a result of processing wheat to make four key ingredients, namely, starch, glucose syrups, wheat gluten and alcohol.

Crimped Maize - The nutritional value of crimped maize is very good at 65-70% DM, 8% protein, 70% starch and with an ME of 14MJ/kgDM.  It can offer very good value as a starch energy source and if you are in an area where maize silage production is difficult, or even impossible, this product offers a cost effective alternative.

Pressed Sugar Beet Pulp - Protein 9%, Oil 0.5%, NDF 40%, ME 13MJ/kg DM.  Pressed pulp is produced during the processing of sugar beet.  Once the sugar has been diffused out from the beet, excess water is removed by passing the material through heavy presses.  The resulting moist feed is known as pressed sugar beet pulp and can be fed fresh or ensiled for future use.

Note: The above analyses are guideline figures expressed on a dry matter basis.

Grains

Solutions SR 40 - Protein 40%, Oil 5%, Fibre 10%, ME 12.5MJ/kg DM.  This new unique processed blend has been developed as a high protein “straights replacer”. It provides rapidly available rumen protein (ERDP) from urea and good levels of digestible undegradable protein (DUP). It is specifically formulated to balance low protein forages and straights.

Confectionary Blends

Dairy Blend - SugaRich Dairy/Beef Blend is made up of confectionery and bakery by-products.  The manufacturing process involves blending, grinding and sieving. The finished product is presented as a light coloured meal. It should not be used through a farm silo as sticking may occur.

These locations all handle large shipments direct from the countries of origin, such as the USA, Brazil, Argentina and Malaysia. There are then a number of smaller ports such as Plymouth, Teignmouth, Newport, Tilbury, Ipswich and New Holland that take smaller shipments on coasters from the continent and transshipments from Rotterdam.
