Ten Point Plan for Establishing a New Ley
- Soil test – correct pH and nutrient deficiencies. Phosphate is particularly important for establishment
- Burn off old sward with Roundup (Glyphosate)
- Create a fine, firm seedbed
- Ideally sow into warm, moist soil
- Broadcast or drill grass seed (cross drill)
- Drill no deeper than 15mm
- Cambridge roll
- Monitor Frit Fly, Leatherjacket and Wireworm. Treat at first signs of damage
- Slug pellets advisable in wet seasons
- Control broad leaved weeds e.g. chickweed before they take over the reseed either by light sheep grazing or suitable weedkillers

Direct Drilling Grass After Using Glyphosate (Roundup / Clinic Ace)
There are two situations where grass may be direct drilled:
a) Following a 1-2 year old ley - without surface mat of old grass
It is essential to remove, or graze thoroughly surface trash from 5 days after spraying. Grass and Clover may be direct drilled once all trash is cleared.
b) Following a long ley / permanent pasture - with some surface mat of old grass
Spray the ley in the autumn. Delay direct drilling until the following spring and give the surface mat time to decompose. Removal followed by harrowing to break the soil surface to the depth of decaying roots and rhizomes will aerate the soil and speed the breakdown of the organic mat and reduce the risk of toxins being present when grass seeds are drilled in the spring.
