Muscle Strain Muscle Strain or Ligament Sprain? What's the difference? Understanding a little about the mechanism of these injuries and the difference between the two could lead you into applying or receiving the correct treatment sooner and therefore hopefully reducing the time you are out of action because of it. - Osteopathy Advice and Guides - A Reflection! - Within the last 10 topics, we’ve covered all the major joint areas and suggested a few common conditions which could be causing problems for each. Frequently, just having a better idea of how your body works as well as a few ideas as to the common causes for the pain you may be feeling can be helpful in itself... Read more...
- Hand Pain - This particular topic really is handy! Our hands and wrists are incredible structures and are one of the defining features which make us human – we can perform incredibly detailed and precise movements such as writing, operating a computer mouse, threading a needle and playing many musical instruments. At the same time... Read more...
- Hip Pain - First let's find the hip! There always seems to be a little (understandable) confusion as to where our hips actually are. Maybe this is the result of some rather sketchy teachings of anatomy when we were children - remember the song “...your hip bone’s connected to your thigh bone, your thigh bone’s connected to your knee bone…?” Most of us probably do, so it’s a pity that it’s not particularly accurate when it comes to the hip part!! - Knee Problems - Clicks, cracks, swelling, aches and pain – our knees can cause a multitude of symptoms... they are the largest joint in our bodies and are probably the most complex; unfortunately they are also one of the most commonly injured joints. Read more...
- Foot Pain - Our foot and ankle complex is clever: mobile enough to allow us to walk over rough ground yet strong enough to propel our whole body weight thousands of times per day.Unfortunately despite this essential role, our feet can become a bit ignored. Read more...
- Headache - For some a headache can be a very worrying and distressing symptom, whilst for others it is an almost daily occurrence. Headaches are one of the most common reasons why patients will visit their GP. Read more...
- Low Back Pain - For many farmers, lambing time is particularly stressful. With all the pressure (and sleepless nights) that it brings and all the variables that can determine whether you have a good or a great season the last thing you need is your back playing up. Read more...

Elbow Pain - Although elbow pain can affect anyone at any time, gardeners can be particualrly vulnerable to it. As Spring makes our gardens more accessible, we look at some ways to avoid and alleviate elbow pain. Read more...
-
Neck Pain - The neck has a hard old job: it protects vital arteries and the spinal cord and provides a large range of movement so that we can see and hear effectively. Yet, whilst doing all of this, the neck supports the weight of the head which weighs approximately 10lbs! Read more...
-
Shoulder Pain - Our shoulder joints are pretty impressive really. They have the largest range of movement of any single joint in our body yet in certain positions are strong enough to enable us to lift, push and pull some very heavy objects. Read more...

Mid-Back Pain - Do you have indigestion? Or is it actually mid-back pain? So far we’ve approached neck pain and lower back pain but there is an often forgotten about but crucially important part of our spines connecting the two areas; the Thoracic Spine. Read more...

An introduction!
I qualified as an Osteopath in 2000 and have worked in busy practices in London and Oxfordshire seeing a diverse range of patients and conditions. I have recently joined Rebecca Popplewell and her team at Molford House Surgery full time. After a period of 14 years away, my wife Tammy and I have been able to move back to South Molton to raise our young son Calum. I grew up in South Molton and many of you will know my father Alec Wilson a local vet in the area for 40 plus years. I have developed a particular interest in ergonomic related problems, sports injuries, the problems associated with degenerative changes and the management of chronic pain patterns. My eight years of teaching experience has further helped to hone my skills – there’s nothing like being questioned by a group of keen undergraduates to make sure you know your stuff!!
Osteopathy is an expanding profession with more and more patients recognising the benefits that it can provide. I feel that the profession could still be more visible to the public: there are still too many people that I meet out and about that don’t know what an osteopath does or what he can successfully treat. I hope that by providing information such as on the Mole Valley Farmers website our local community can learn more about what we do, but more importantly learn a little more about how we can help ourselves.
As an osteopath we are often the first port of call for musculoskeletal complaints such as low back, neck and shoulder pain and the problems associated with Arthritic changes. Our detailed clinical training (with an emphasis on musculoskeletal disorders) takes a minimum of four years and gives us the skills to help us accurately assess and diagnose. We can offer treatment for those conditions which will benefit from our intervention and help in the referral process for conditions that require further investigation.
I intend to visit various topics which I hope will be of interest to fellow Mole Valley Farmers members which will be posted on the Mole Valley Farmers website, initially at monthly intervals.
Until then I will leave you with a couple of facts to start us off:
- An estimated 11.6 million working days a year are lost to work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders…..(www.hse.gov.uk)
- 80% of the UK’s adult population will experience Back Pain at some point in their life….(www.hse.gov.uk)
