Osteopathy Advice and Guides - A Reflection!

by James Wilson BSc (Hons) Ost Med. DO - find out more about James.

Within the last 10 topics, we’ve covered all the major joint areas and suggested a few common conditions which could be causing problems for each.  Frequently, just having a better idea of how your body works as well as a few ideas as to the common causes for the pain you may be feeling can be helpful in itself.

Additionally I’ve attempted to offer some advice on a few self-help measures, although this is inherently difficult to do without having a patient physically with you. The amount of general advice I am able to offer is restricted by the sheer number of conditions that can affect each joint area – what could work for one condition could make another worse!

Therefore it follows that we really need to diagnose the problems of each specific patient in order to provide tailored and accurate advice. So with this in mind, what I hope to do over the next few topics is to cover some more specific conditions (rather than generalised joint areas) so that I can hopefully provide a greater degree of self-help advice, which let’s face it is what most readers will be after!!

Before we move on to cover different conditions and offer further advice on self-management though, I wanted to use this topic in the way the title suggests – a reflection.

Those of us still completing Tax Returns would do well to take notice of a few of the pointers in the topics Headaches and Neck Pain, as would those who work regularly at a desk.

Many gardeners will soon be starting off seeds in the greenhouse or incubator and as spring approaches the garden will need to be dug, and all those seedlings need potting and later planting out. Now is the time to take heed of some of the specific advice under Elbow Pain and also the topics on Low Back Pain and Shoulder Pain (especially the stretching!)

Many farmers are either well into their lambing or about to start (some of course have already finished, so for them there’s always next year!) so it’s never too late to start some stretching and think about the subtle changes you can make to the activities you do. You’ll find some useful hints in the topics on Neck Pain, Shoulder Pain and Low Back Pain.

Winter, for many, is a less active time but despite the snow and ice and the ensuing disruption to the hunting and shooting calendar, many of us will be managing to remain fairly mobile. As you stand in the field or on peg, hopefully the wise words from the topic on Foot Pain and Mid-Back Pain will gently echo in your ears!

Dog walkers are a hardy lot, out in all weathers 365 days a year for the sole purpose of keeping their faithful friend happy and healthy. As the days draw out the walks get longer, and so does the stress on your Knees and Hips – maybe there’s some useful tips for you in Hip Pain and Knee Pain.

….and lets’ not forget the one that is potentially relevant to all of us, whatever we do: Hand Pain.

Next time: “Muscle Strain or Ligament Sprain – What You Can Do.”
