Apprenticeships with Bicton College & Duchy College

Buzzing with enthusiasm

Apprentices Are Buzzing With New Skills!

Horticultural apprentices from Duchy College Rosewarne and the Eden Project enjoyed a recent trip to the picturesque Tregothnan Estate near Truro, to take part in a course which showed them how to get their gardens buzzing!

During the one day course the group enjoyed an introduction to Tregothnan Estate, learnt about hive structure and management, how to support bee populations through plantation and developed practical skills, all of which were very well received.

Horticulture Course Manager, Sarah Chafer said: “Pollination of crops is a huge issue within food production and horticulture. The subject is closely related to horticulture and the apprentices gained a huge amount of knowledge from the day. We also got to see part of the Tregothnan Estate, and sample some of the famous tea. This is part of the overall experience we can offer Horticulture apprentices at Duchy College, time spent at College during an apprenticeship is so much more than sitting in a classroom!”

Changes in agricultural techniques and other environmental factors have caused a dramatic decline in the bee population. This has caused significant pressure on bee populations worldwide which has a knock on impact on honey production, pollination and subsequently food production.

Head of Rural Economy at the Cornwall College Group, Dr Phil Le Grice, said: “Bees are a vitally important part of our food production process; the skills these students have learnt will help them to consider what else they can do when out at work and in their own gardens”.
