Michael and Danielle Cowell’s Eastyard Herd of Red Ruby Devons has pulled off a notable feat by winning the Devon Cattle Breeders’ Society’s prestigious Breeder of the Year for three consecutive years (2011-2013).  They also have won the one day show Holwell Manor Cup (east) for the third year running.  This is awarded to the exhibitor gaining the most points from Devon classes at a series of one day agricultural shows in the south west.

The Eastyard Herd of Red Ruby Devons – based near Winkleigh, Devon - has made a big impression in a short time; the herd was only formed in 2007.  Some of the foundation cows came from Phillip Huxtable’s Barton Herd at Challacombe near Barnstaple, and these have proved very influential within the Cowell’s Eastyard Herd which is now recognised for producing a clean modern type of Devon.  The commercial potential of this type of animal has been widely recognised by farmers and show judges alike; the Cowells have regularly competed and won against continental breed competitors for Interbreed titles.

Mike Cowell commented “we are obviously delighted to have won for our third consecutive year; not just for ourselves, but for the breed in general.  The Red Ruby Devon has so much to offer beef farmers, that it is vitally important we make the most of our “shop window” to show the breed off at its best and in doing so support our agricultural shows, which are an essential part of farming.”

The Cowell’s also won Female and Young Female of the Year.  DCBS Stock Bull of the Year was awarded to Jeff Thomas from St Just, Cornwall.  This crowned a successful year for Jeff who also won the DCBS National Herd Competition 2013.
