QAC Compliance - Are You Ready?

QACs – are you compliant?

Despite some dairy processors banning the use of quaternary ammonium compound (QAC) products since 2014, there remains a great deal of confusion amongst dairy producers about which products this affects.

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are a group of chemicals that have been widely used as biocides and disinfectants in the dairy industry and also include Didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC) and Benzalkonium chloride (BAC). These chemicals are often used to clean and sanitise milking equipment and are found in certain udder and hoof care products.

Following a tightening of EU legal requirements regarding the levels for QACs in food products and strict customer requirements, many processors are banning the use of QACs because of their potential to contaminate milk.

With many processors now requiring dairy producers to sign declaration forms to con fi rm they are no longer using products containing QACs on their farms, we are encouraging all dairy farmers to check they are compliant with the requirements and review your products and hygiene levels on farm.

Alternative sanitising chemicals to QACs include:

Oxidising agents such as peracetic acid, peroctanoic acid
Actyiviective chlorine products such as sodium hypochlorite (in liquids), triclosene dodium (powders) and mixtures of acids and sodium chlorite producing chlorine dioxide, amines, diamines and their salts, amphoterics including betaines, proprionates, glycinates and imidazoline.

Our dairy hygiene specialists are available to review and advise on your dairy hygiene requirements – they are passionate about enhancing your business performance and profits. Working closely with dairy processors and retailers, they are fully aware of what each one requires from their dairy producers. So for peace of mind, give them a call and let them help you work out which products are most suitable for your business needs.
