Devon Cattle Breeders World Congress 2016

Devon Cattle Breeders World Congress 2016

Devon Cattle Breeders World Congress

It’s not often that cattle breeders from Brazil, the USA, New Zealand, Australia, Uraguay and the UK come together, but this June these nations were brought together with the common interest of Red Ruby Devon cattle. This native British breed of beef cattle has been exported around the world due to its ability to produce prime beef from grass and its ability to thrive in extremes of temperature, be that heat or cold. The Devon World Congress, which takes place every four years, was hosted this year by the Devon Cattle Breeders Society in the UK and comprised a two week programme with a Conference in Exeter, Devon on 13 June.

The day had a great mix of reports from each of the countries, detailing their experiences of the breed in the respective countries, as well as a summary of threats, opportunities and ways to collaborate internationally. There was an impressive line up of renowned speakers and starting the day off was the welcome address from the lead sponsor, Mole Valley Farmers. The conference ended with promises of further collaboration between country breed societies.

The Devon World Congress then looked forward to a final week touring pedigree herds, judging of over 80 Devon cattle at the Royal Three Counties Show and visits to The Duchy Home Farm, Tetbury and also visiting the Patron of the Devon Cattle Breeders Society His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.
