Get an Early Start on the Gardening This Year

 Gardening in January

Gardening in January … Planning your plantings for 2015

January is not a time when you want to be outdoors too much. So instead, gardeners sit down with planning books, garden designs and decide what they might look to grow for a change or challenge this year. There are also some vegetables you can sow even in these chilly months, and you’ll be off to a flying start for the season.

In mild areas, broad beans will be alright planted in pots and kept in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse.

For early crops, plant lettuces, summer brassicas such as cauliflowers and cabbages, spinach, salad onions and turnips. You can buy potting composts, seed trays and propagators from MVF.

This month we have Suttons Seeds on offer on a buy one get one free deal (cheapest item free), so it’s a good time to buy. You can grow onion seed, celeriac or celery in a heated propagator. Herbs and salad leaves can of course be grown all year round on the window sill.

Its time to start your early potatoes. What varieties are you going to grow this year? Are you going to risk the weather and get first earlies going? A variety you’ve not tried before, or one that you love eating? How lovely to be digging up your own potatoes at the beginning of the season when either no-one else has any or buying from the local supermarket or greengrocer is expensive! January sees our seed potato varies on offer at Buy 2 for £6 we have a wide selection, available from your local branch.

If you want some fresh air and exercise after the indulgences of Christmas and New Year, then wrap up, put your boots on and head outside for some tidying up. Sweep leaves, scoop up mud or dirt, venture out to the greenhouse to give it an annual spruce up and debug. Clean your garden pots, large or small (if you haven’t done it already!)
