Did you know that around 80% of dogs over the age of 3 suffer from some sort of dental disease, but 90% of owners think their dogs’ teeth are fine?

Oral health and hygiene are important for the health and well-being of your dog and represent a vital support mechanism for its natural resistance to disease. Many dog owners believe that dry food and bones are sufficient to clean their dog’s teeth, but this is not enough to maintain healthy gums and teeth. Bad breath is not just part of being a dog; it is often a sign of gum disease.

Gum disease is one of the most common problems for dogs and ‘periodontal disease’ describes a number of plaque-induced inflammatory reactions that are associated with oral pain, halitosis, tooth loss and potentially, diseases in remote body organs.

The process of gum disease usually begins with a build-up of Calculus otherwise known as Tartar. This forms a rough surface which makes further plaque formation very easy. Plaque is a film of bacteria and their by-products, in some cases the bacteria can lead to Gingivitis which is the first stage of gum disease. You can usually tell if your pet has the first stages of gum disease by a reddening of the gums but don’t worry it is reversible. Periodontitis is the second stage of gum disease, it leads to destruction of gum tissue and is not reversible.

Brushing your dog’s teeth regularly is the best way to help prevent gum disease and keep their teeth and gums healthy. By introducing tooth brushing slowly, you can help your dog learn to enjoy it – or at least to tolerate it! If brushing your dog’s teeth is not convenient or your dog will not tolerate it, there are treats on the market which have specific properties for cleaning teeth.

Pedigree® Dentastix™ has a unique X shape and when fed daily, its special texture is scientifically proven to help reduce the build-up of tartar by up to 80%. They contain two active ingredients, which bond with the calcium in saliva and slow down the build-up of tartar. This helps plaque stay softer for longer and makes it easier to remove by chewing Pedigree® Dentastix®.
