Smallholder Training

Is 2017 the year to make your smallholding dreams come true?

Debbie Kingsley and her husband Andrew Hubbard

This training course could be for you.

How many of us wonder if living in the country rearing pigs, cows, sheep and poultry and growing our own fruit and veg is the life for us? You may be in need of some solid advice and a hands-on taster of what’s involved before feeling ready to make the commitment, particularly as it can mean moving home.

At South Yeo Farm West, in Devon, just outside Okehampton on the fringes of Dartmoor, Debbie Kingsley and her husband Andrew Hubbard have had more than 800 hopeful smallholders train with them over the last ten years.

People come from all over the world and the e-mails and phone calls roll in, saying “We’ve done it, we’ve just bought a smallholding!”, “We brought home our first pigs today” and “I don’t know why we didn’t do this earlier – we’re having the time of our lives, thank you!”

Debbie and Andrew, both professional trainers, have been farming for over 25 years while Debbie regularly writes for Country Smallholding and Home Farmer magazines. Their courses include delicious home grown, home cooked lunches and Devon cream teas. There is plenty of time to chat over the kitchen table between livestock sessions, where students learn about everything from legal requirements, fencing, housing, animal welfare, health planning, basic medication and land management. They keep rare and native breeds of cattle, pigs, sheep, poultry and waterfowl and are committed to high environmental standards on their 108 acres, for the benefit of wildlife and their livestock.
