Welly Wangers Wanted

Devon and Cornwall - Holsworthy and Stratton Agricultural Show needs your help to set a Guinness World Record for welly wanging!

Show organisers are calling on local families and visitors to the area to put their welly throwing skills to the test as part of an official Guinness World Record attempt for the most number of people throwing Wellington boots simultaneously.

With the current record standing at 636 wellies, the aim is to see 800 boots thrown in the air at the show on Thursday 23 August.

The challenge is being run by the show’s committee and supported by the local Mole Valley Farmers Holsworthy store with boots donated by key supplier, Muck Boots.

Show committee member and local farmer, Lisa Lucas initially came up with the idea of setting a World Record. She says it will be the centre piece of the show, which will have the usual array of attractions, including livestock showing, local food and drink, crafts and family entertainment.

She says: “We’re not just your average show. We wanted to do something really unique and entertaining that all of the local community could get involved in.”

Ian Rolinson, member of the show committee and commercial business manager for Mole Valley Farmers’ Holsworthy store adds: “It’s a fantastic opportunity to have a great day at your local agricultural show and come home a World record holder. If we can get 800 people throwing wellies, it should be quite a spectacle and a fun day out for all the family.”

The attempt will take place on the afternoon of the show. Visitors on the day will be asked to pick up a raffle ticket to show their interest in taking part in the record attempt, as a means of gauging numbers. The attempt will then be carefully marshalled and assessed by an independent adjudicator.

Lisa adds: “We’d like to thank Mole Valley Farmers and Muck Boots as it would have been really difficult to get this off the ground without them.”

The show committee is currently looking at options for recycling the wellies after the record attempt and would welcome any suggestions from businesses. Please contact Ian Rolinson if you think you can help. Tel: 07733 224519.
