A guide to the annual cost of eggs from your own hens

Ever wondered how much your home-laid eggs are actually costing you?

Below is an approximate guide to the costs of feeding one hen per year and what each egg will cost a customer depending on the price of the feed you have purchased.

The figures are based on the following:

  • One hen eats on average 125g of feed per day and therefore requires 2.3 20kg sacks of feed per year.
  • The hen is laying for 273 days (9 months) of the year.
  • The calculation does not include extras such as Mixed Corn.

For a 20kg sack of feed costing £6.00

2.3 sacks = £14.00
1400/365 = 3.8p per day for feed
1400/273 = 5.12 = 5p per egg or 30p per half dozen eggs

For a 20kg sack of feed costing £8.00

2.3 sacks = £18.60
1860/365 = 5.1p per day for feed
1860/273 = 6.8 = 7p per egg or 42p per half dozen eggs

Poultry cornFor a 20kg sack of feed costing £10.00

2.3 sacks = £23.30
2330/365 = 6.4p per day for feed
2330/273 = 8.5 = 9p per egg or 54p per half dozen eggs

For a 20kg sack of feed costing £12.00 (i.e. Organic)

2.3 sacks = £28.60
2860/365 = 7.8p per day for feed
2860/273 = 10.5 = 11p per egg or 66p per half dozen eggs
