Poultry Housing

Housing Your Chickens

You need to make sure the poultry housing you have is right for the number of chickens you want to keep and how ‘free range’ you want them to be.  The housing should be large enough for the number of birds concerned – a house measuring 1.2m x 1.8m should be sufficient for six hens, providing the have ample outside space too.

There are two basic types of poultry housing available – arks and coops.  They vary in size and the chickens need to have enough space to run and peck around in, with protection from the elements, predators, injury and theft.  When you are first starting out, a small but moveable wooden structure is usually best because ideally, houses should be rotated to prevent disease and to keep the grass fresh.   Our staff will be happy to show you the different kinds of arks and coops we have always on display.  If you want your chickens to have some running space then it is a good idea to incorporate the house within a fenced off area.  We supply a number of types of fencing, including electric fencing - ideal to keep predators away from the house at night.

Poultry housing must be water proof, rat proof, fox proof, yet still provide good ventilation.  Your chickens should have enough space for them all to access the food and water.  It must be possible and practical for you to reach all parts of the house for cleaning.  If places are difficult or impossible to clean, dirt, parasites and diseases are likely to build up.  Perches should Free range chickenbe removable for easy cleaning and you should provide at least 20cm of perch space per bird.  Make sure that feed and next boxes are not placed under perches or they will soon become soiled.  Water should be placed outside the house.

Planning laws mean that any structure which is fixed or relies on a concrete pad as a base will be seen as a permanent building and may need planning permission.  Where you do keep chickens on a paved or concreted area, it should be covered with wood or bark chip and have a supply of greenery available to replace the grass.

The bedding for the houses should either be straw, sawdust or wood chippings, this should be changed regularly.  Disinfectant needs to be used on a regular basis to keep away infection.

Provide a nest box lined with shavings or straw, one box for every four birds.  They should be about 40cm2 and at least the same in height.  They should be lined with soft, dry litter and placed somewhere dark and secluded, to give the hens some privacy to lay.  The box and eggs will also stay cleaner if the box is only used for laying and Chickens scratchingnot for sleeping or social behaviour.  Putting the boxes lower than the roosts will also stop young birds developing the habit of sleeping in them.  Nest boxes that are easy to open (preferably from the outside of the hen house) will make life easier for you and will avoid frightening the birds.

When considering where to site your chicken coop or ark, check the drainage situation.  Boggy land is more easily infected with parasites and les likely to produce good grass growth, so light, free-draining land is best.  Birds need to be move around rather than always kept on the same piece of land, this applies regardless of your acreage or how many chickens you keep.

Hens may well damage garden plants and vegetable patches if they are not confined or stopped from entering them.  If birds are to be confined, then electric fencing is a convenient and effective method of doing so, as it is easy to move at regular intervals.  Electric fencing alone will not however stop predators and the hens will need to be shut in the house at night.
